ReplyDeleteTWO ROCK CUT TEMPELS WITH INSCRIPTIONS IN VARUNACHIMALAI (THIRUMALAPURAM) :
ReplyDeleteBRIEF HISTORY : The two rock cut cave temples of Pandya period (circa 750 A.D) are situated in the Sankaranarayanakoil Taluk in Tirunelveli district. They are excavated in the rocky hill known as Varunachimalai . Among the two caves one is finished and other is unfinished. The finished one is more significant with rectangular ardhamandapa entered through a flight of steps and cells on the western walls. It contains Pandya bas-relief sculptures and two inscriptions of later date. This temple has the bas-relief of the trinity, where four handed Vishnu in the middle with two dwarfs on either side in anjali mudra are depicted. The attributes like sankha and chakra on upper two hands and lower hands kept on the lap. Seated Ganesha is seen next to him. Siva is seen on the other side. There is also an ante-chamber. These figures are excellent examples of the Pandya art.
An inscription of 12 th Century mentions a gift of land to the temple by a prince named Chakravartin Srivallabhadeva The site is a centrally protected monument under the control of Archaeological Survey of India since 1922.
